Physio Tips to Recover Faster as Sport Ramps Up

One of the most common things we hear in the clinic is:

“My X-ray or MRI came back normal… so why am I still in pain?”

It can be incredibly frustrating. You know something doesn’t feel right, yet your scan doesn’t provide the answers you were hoping for.

The truth is, this is actually quite common.

Scans Don’t Tell the Whole Story

X-rays and MRI scans are fantastic tools, but they only show us part of the picture.

They can identify things like fractures, significant ligament, tendon and muscle tears, arthritis and other structural changes. What they can’t show, however, is how your body moves, how strong you are, or whether your muscles and joints are working together the way they should.

In other words, they show us the anatomy, not the way our body functions.

Pain Doesn’t Always Mean Damage

It’s remarkable how many painful conditions simply don’t show up clearly on imaging. Things like joint stiffness, muscle weakness, movement compensation, tendon overload and irritation of sensitive tissues can all cause significant pain despite a “normal” scan.

Interestingly, the opposite is also true.

Many people with no pain at all have MRI findings such as disc bulges, rotator cuff tears, tendon degeneration or arthritis. Research has consistently shown that imaging findings don’t always match a person’s symptoms.

This is why we treat you the person, not your scan.

Finding the Real Cause

A thorough physiotherapy assessment looks well beyond imaging.

We assess your movement, strength, flexibility, balance, control and the activities that reproduce your symptoms. This often helps identify the true driver of your pain and, more importantly, how to address it.

Once we understand what’s contributing to your symptoms, we can develop a tailored treatment plan to help reduce pain, restore function and get you back to doing what you enjoy.

Don’t Let a “Normal” Scan Stop You

If you’ve been told your scan is normal but you’re still struggling with pain, don’t assume you simply have to live with it.

A normal scan doesn’t mean your pain isn’t real. It simply means we need to look beyond the image to find the answer.

If you’re frustrated by ongoing pain despite a normal scan, don’t assume you simply have to live with it. Our team can help identify what’s driving your symptoms and develop a clear plan to get you back to doing the things you enjoy.
