Conditions We Treat

Sports Injury

Sports people can acquire acute (short term) or chronic (long term) injuries as a result of competing in all levels in their sport, and treatment by knowledgeable physios ensures optimal recovery. Total Body Physio offer quality care for sports injuries.

Knee pain

Our knees are a vital part of everyday movement and activity, and it is incredibly important to look after them. Knees are vulnerable to injury and physiotherapy can act not only as a treatment for the post injury patient, but also as a preventative measure.

Back Pain

Back pain is debilitating and can affect all areas of life including work, leisure time and sporting activities. Physiotherapy may be the solution to your back pain and enable you to return to the movement and activity you love.

Shoulder Pain

Painful shoulder conditions that limit movement are very common, and are caused by injuries affecting the shoulder joint, muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. As the shoulder has a high degree of flexibility, it is therefore less stable, and more prone to injuries than other joints of the body.

Neck Pain

Neck pain is very common with about one in 10 people having it at any given time. Problems within the neck can also cause headache, shoulder pain, jaw pain, pins and needles in the hands, carpal tunnel syndrome, and upper back pain.

Pre & Post-Op Rehabilitation

When undergoing orthopaedic surgery Pre-operative rehab prepares patients for surgery, while post-operative rehab focuses on recovery and restoring functionality. Among other areas, our staff commonly conduct rehab for those requiring knee, ankle, shoulder, hip and spinal surgery helping them restore function.

Sciatica

Sciatica is characterised by pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels into one or both legs. Sciatic nerve pain often varies in its’ intensity and frequency, however usually there will be a component of sharp, jabbing or “electric shock” pains that radiate into the legs.

Achilles Tendonitis

The Achilles tendon is located behind the ankle joint and connects the heel bones to the calf muscles. It is the longest tendon in the body, and injury to the Achilles tendon is very common, particularly in runners.

Ankle Pain

Ankle injuries are incredibly common in all age brackets, and have a variety of causes including sports, work, exercise and everyday injuries. Sports such as basketball and skiing make players more susceptible to ankle injury. Everyday activities such as rolling an ankle on an uneven footpath can cause the development of an ankle injury.

Hip Pain

Hip pain can make daily life and participation in leisure and sport unbearable. People young and old experience hip pain for a variety of reasons, and physiotherapy can be the solution for treating hip pain. If you are diagnosed and treated by a physiotherapist, you can ensure your hip pain will be reduced and your functionality increased.

Headache

Headaches are one of the most common illnesses in Australia, with around 15 per cent of us taking painkillers for a headache at any given time. Because headaches are so common, most people think they are a normal part of life. However, a persistent headache is a sign that something is wrong.

Whiplash

A whiplash neck sprain occurs when your head is suddenly jolted backwards and forwards in a whip-like movement usually caused in motor car accidents known as a “rear-ender”. These movements generate considerable force, typically causing the neck to move far beyond the normal range of movement and causes damage to the delicate supporting structures of the neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, a referral from a GP is not necessary to book a physio appointment. You can book directly with us online or, if you’re not sure what you need, give us a call and our friendly team will be happy to help.

Yes, physio is covered by private health insurance. However, it is important to check with your individual insurer to see what level of cover you have and whether there are any restrictions on the type of physio treatment you can receive.

At your first appointment, your physiotherapist will take a comprehensive history and ask about your current symptoms, medical history and any previous injuries or surgery.

They will then conduct a physical examination to assess the cause of your pain or injury. Based on this information, they will develop a treatment plan aimed at reducing your pain and helping you regain normal movement and function.

Our physiotherapists use a range of different techniques to treat our patients, depending on their individual needs. These may include manual therapy (such as massage and joint mobilisation), clinical Pilates and exercises prescribed specifically for your condition. We also use modalities such as heat/cold therapy and ultrasound to help reduce pain and inflammation.

Our stand-alone physiotherapy clinic is fitted out with exercise and clinical Pilates (Five Dock clinic only) equipment for our patients to use as part of their personalised treatment plans. We also have a second clinic located inside the Five Dock Medical Centre, giving us access to x-ray and radiology facilities as well as allowing interaction with other health professionals including GPs and allied health.

How often you see a physiotherapist varies, depending on your condition, goals and the treatment required. During your initial consultation, your physio will complete a detailed analysis of your condition, symptoms and movement to identify the underlying cause of your pain, injury or discomfort. From this, we will tailor a personalised treatment plan aimed at reducing pain and restoring function as quickly and safely as possible. Your physio will advise on how often you should come in for treatment, as well as any at-home stretching or exercises that may assist.
